Overview by IAAF | |||
In the 10 editions of the world championships to 2011, only once had the title been won with a jump below 14.90. The average winning distance was 15.13. In Moscow, a winning jump of 14.85 (14.948 from take-off) sufficed, and Ibargüen’s second best jump of 14.83 (14.927) would also have been enough to take the title. Saladukha led the field at the end of the first round with a mediocre 14.42, and was superseded when returning drug offender Koneva jumped a personal best 14.81. Ibargüen had her winning effort a further two jumps after that, with phases of 5.58, 4.01 and 5.26. Saladukha then settled the medal positions with 14.65. The 37 succeeding jumps made no difference to the top seven apart from Williams’s 14.62 which secured fourth spot. Colombia won its first ever gold medal in the World Championships. | |||
