Overview by IAAF
Just six nations were represented in the final which featured four Kenyans and three Americans. The Kenyans ran a team race, with Manangoi leading for most of the first lap (photo-cell 59.14), succeeded by Cheruiyot, who took the field through 800m in a photo-cell 1:58.52. Kiprop, the favourite, moved up from last to eighth after two laps. At the bell Centrowitz with Manangoi stopped the photo-cell clock at 2:42.17, while Kiprop was still lagging near the back of the pack. Olympic Champion Makhloufi sped to the front with 300m to go. This thinned out the field and enabled Kiprop to easily pick off those ahead. The Algerian led into the straight, but was threatened by Iguider, and the now flying Kiprop. The defending champion went to the front with 30m remaining and won by 2m from the fast-closing Manangoi, with Iguider edging the exhausted Makhloufi for third. Kiprop’s last lap of 51.53 was much the fastest of the field. “I never panic in the race,” admitted the winner. “I knew what to do and what I was trained for.”
