Fajdek was the only man to throw further than 80m in 2015 and had done so nine times before Beijing. There looked to be only one winner and the Pole duly led the qualifiers with 78.38 from the surprising Miller (77.42). Fajdek had a history of fouls, but here he started with a safe 76.40, as Nazarov led proceedings with 76.83 and then 77.61. The defending champion settled things in round three with 80.64, and then cemented his lead with 80.88, the winning throw. Behind him, both Nazarov and Nowicki threw 78.55, with the silver medal decided by President of the Tajik Athletics Federation’s next best of 78.06 (to Nowicki’s 77.20).
