Overview by IAAF
Defending champion Storl and new star Kovacs were felt to be the two best, with the German leading 2-1 in their clashes of 2015. Kovacs was the only man over 21m in round one, but Storl overtook his 21.23 with 21.46 in the second round. The shocks came in the next two rounds. First, Richards equalled his national record of 21.69 to move into the lead, and then Walsh set an Oceanian record of 21.58. Kovacs – a Pennsylvanian of Hungarian descent – then put 21.67 to relegate Storl to an unaccustomed fourth place. The American then took the lead for good with 21.93, and Storl responded with 21.74. This magnificent competition, staged in uncomfortably humid conditions, saw a championship best ever fourth place distance for the unfortunate Walsh.
