Overview by IAAF
Five weeks before the championships, Dibaba clocked 3:50.07 to break a world record which had stood since 1993 to China’s Qu Yunxia. The 278 DOHA 2019 PAST RESULTS/WORLD CHAMPS WOMEN’S 1500m final in Beijing started at nothing like that pace, with the photo-cell clock showing only 77.06 at 400m as Rowbury led the pack. The shuffling pace continued until just before the penultimate lap, at which point Dibaba suddenly took off. According to her bib transponder, Dibaba’s first 700m had averaged just 18.73 per 100m section. The next one took only 14.51. The bell was reached in 3:08.69, after a 57.53 lap. Kipyegon, Seyaum and Hassan were barely hanging on. Dibaba’s pressure finally told with 150m remaining, as she steadily drew clear of her pursuers. Her final time of 4:08.09 was nothing special, but a transponder-timed last 800m in 1:56.95 was enormously impressive. The next four finishers also ran their last two laps in less than two minutes. “I know everybody in this race and I know everything about my competitors, so I was very confident,” said the new champion.
