Overview by IAAF
After a slow start, Babar of India broke away, passing 1000m in 3:09.96, and still led at 2000m in 6:22.27. Coburn took the lead with two laps to go, and at the bell (8:12.85) there were still seven in the leading group. Olympic Champion Ghribi went to the front just after the bell, but could not break away. As the leaders came out of the final water jump, the Tunisian led by inches from Jepkemoi, with Krause, Coburn and Assefa just behind. Approaching the final barrier Krause sidestepped inside and came off the final hurdle just ahead of Ghribi, with Jepkemoi third. In an exciting finish, those positions were reversed with the Kenyan emerging as the victor. Barely a metre covered the top three. For Morocco, Ouhaddou was disqualified for a third successive World Championships. Her results in 2011 and 2013 were annulled because of doping violation revealed by her biological passport. In Beijing she was sanctioned for stepping inside the inner lane line.
