Overview by IAAF | |||
Perkovi had beaten Caballero 7-0 before the championships, but in Beijing the tall and relatively slender Cuban (1.75m/73kg) was at a new level. She went out to 69.28 in the first round, ending the throw in a sitting position in the circle. The Croat was sufficiently discombobulated that she was unable to launch a serious challenge until the last round, at which point she was languishing in fourth place. Perkovi then finally threw 67.39 for the silver, an effort she later described with a four-letter word. One of the biggest favourites in athletics had been defeated. Müller managed to hold onto the bronze medal with 65.63, withstanding the challenge of Pérez, who reached 65.46 in the last round. | |||
