Overview by IAAF
At the beginning of August Wodarczyk had become the first woman to throw over 80m with 81.08, and she was strongly favoured to regain the title she at that point only won in 2009. The Pole led after the first round with a safe 74.40, and established her class with successive throws of 78.52, 80.27, a winning 80.85, and 79.31. Both 80m efforts were championship records and all those throws were well beyond the best of silver medallist Zhang, who reached a seasonal best of 76.33. The 2007 champion Heidler was regarded as a likely medallist, but had a poor day, with the bronze being taken by Tavernier’s 74.02, just ahead of Hitchon’s national record 73.86. Afterwards Wodarczyk commented “I must admit I feel a bit disappointed, because I really hoped for the world record here”.
