for the USA, his 44.8 taking a five-metre lead over Britain and Spain. Roberts maintained his team’s advantage at halfway, now from Trinidad, for whom Richards clocked 43.5 after a screaming backstraight. Britain were next, with the chasing pack well back. Cherry extended the US lead to nearly 10m with 500m remaining, but Cedenio swallowed up the advantage in the next 100m. The lead was down to a metre at the final exchange, with Britain an isolated third. Gordon sat in on Kerley before going past in the last 50m to win. Rooney also gained ground to earn what would be his fourth world relay medal, once doping adjustments were applied. The battle for the minor places was won by Belgium, anchored by K Borlée in 43.60. Jamaica, Bahamas and Botswana all made the mistake of not fielding stronger teams in the heats. All were favoured to do well in the finals, but none qualified.
