Overview by IAAF
An unwelcome but unavoidable moment of London 2017 was when 43.84 performer Makwala was withdrawn from the 400m final by the IAAF Medical Delegate. He’d been diagnosed with an infectious disease (norovirus) on August 7 and put into quarantine for 48 hours. “The IAAF is very sorry that the hard work and talent of Isaac Makwala won’t be on display tonight but we have to think of the welfare of all athletes,” it was explained in a press release on the night of the final. So the championships were denied van Niekerk versus Makwala, but Gardiner emerged as a potential champion with his Bahamian record of 43.89 in his semi-final. Such a time would not be matched in the final which took place two days later in conditions described as “freezing”. Van Niekerk led the final from the gun, passing 200m in 20.78. He led by 3m at the 300m point in 31.64, with Thebe in second place, just ahead of Gardiner and Allen. Van Niekerk maintained his advantage over Gardiner to the finish, as others fell back, with the sole exception of World Junior Champion Haroun. He moved from eighth to third in the last 80m.
