Overview by IAAF
The medals were decided with the first three throws of the second round. Finley, who had already set a lifetime best of 67.07, went into the lead with 68.03. Then the favourite, Ståhl, registered 69.19. The quick-spinning Gudžius then propelled his discus out to 69.21, a lifetime best, and the title was won. Behind the medallists, Dacres was a solid fourth with three marks over 65m, while former champions Ma achowski and Harting took the next two spots. The twelfth place of 2007 winner Kanter emphasised the changing of the guard in the event. Biomechanical analysis showed that despite their size, Gudžius (2.00m/130kg) and Ståhl (2.00m/145kg) each managed to move across the circle about a tenth of a second quicker than the average time taken by the other finalists. For the first time, throws in excess of 63m were not enough to make the final.
