Overview by IAAF
Kendricks had been the world’s most consistent vaulter of 2017, and the only man to clear six metres outdoors. So it was no surprise that he shared the lead as the bar was moved up to 5.89, but Xue was most certainly an unexpected co-leader to this point. The Chinese made every height up to a national record of 5.82. With Kendricks and Xue over 5.82 first time, Wojciechowski, Lisek and Lavillenie – who had shared the bronze in 2015 – all passed to 5.89 after first-time failures. Lisek, the first to jump, cleared 5.89, and was followed almost inevitably by Kendricks. Lavillenie then cleared at his second attempt, and the three medals were decided. Kendricks made certain of an outright win by being the only man to clear 5.95.
