Overview by IAAF
Ta Lou started fastest in the final, with her teammate Ahouré the nearest challenger. At the halfway mark Ta Lou led by half a metre from Ahouré, Bowie, Thompson and Baptiste in a line. The Trinidadian then faded, while Thompson seemed to stumble at 60m. Bowie and Schippers finished fastest of all, with the Dutch sprinter moving from eighth at halfway to third at the finish. Bowie caught Ta Lou in the last 10m, dipping sharply to win by 0.01 before falling over, suffering cuts and bruises. Her race halves took 6.11/4.74 compared with Ta Lou’s 6.09/4.77. Thompson, the double Olympic Champion, had been ill in the call room, but offered no excuse for her loss in interviews. Bowie seemed disbelieving after the race: “Am I really World Champion? Right now it hasn’t sunk in.”
