Perkovi led the qualifying with 69.67, a distance no other thrower had reached for two years. The former Croatian member of parliament led the field by nearly 4m after the first round, reaching 69.30 to the 65.49 of Robert-Michon. Perkovi emphasised her position as the best with throws of 70.31 and 70.28 to ensure her second World Championship gold. Stevens had moved into third in the second round with 65.46, and the 2009 champion then produced a seasonal best of 66.82, backed ip with 66.59. She then launched a Commonwealth record 69.64, surprising everyone, including herself, to take silverl. Robert-Michon showed a cool head following that throw with her seasonal best of 66.21 for the bronze. Gold and silver went to those who sent off their discuses the quickest, Perkovi (24.93 m/s) and Samuels (25.60 m/s). | |||
