Overview by IAAF
There had been early attempts to make a break, with Ribeiro leading by 35 seconds at one point before being caught in the 11th kilometre. Dixon led at halfway in 74:20, and had 35 seconds on the field before being reeled in at 29Km. As late as 35Km, there was still an unusually large lead group of 14 runners, including four Ethiopians, three Kenyans, and two each from the USA and Bahrain. Cragg began to push the pace at 36Km and the group was reduced to nine. Chelimo moved to the front, and went 15m clear after 38Km, with 2011/2013 champion Kiplagat the closest chaser. The Kenyan was one second ahead of Chelimo at 40Km (2:20:06), with Cragg and Cheyech 40m back. The Kenyan-Bahraini Chelimo then made her final effort and eventually won by seven seconds from Kiplagat. Cragg finished brilliantly, gaining more than 10 seconds on the exhausted Kiplagat in the last 600m. “My life will change because I am a World Champion for my country now,” said Chelimo, whose transfer from Kenya to Bahrain was approved in 2016.
