Overview by IAAF
Unlike the men, gliders were in the majority in the women’s shot final. They included the winner Gong, finally a global champion after a string of minor medals at world or Olympic level. The Germanbased Chinese was always in front, from her 19.16 in the first round, followed by 19.35 when no-one else could reach 19m. The best of the rest to that point were Olympic medallists Márton (18.89) and Carter (18.86), then in the third Carter progressed to 19.14. Márton lost another place when Thomas-Dodd reached 18.91 in the fifth, a round which was ended with Gong’s winning distance of 19.94. The Hungarian went back up into second spot with her closing 19.49. The winner’s success, concluded the London biomechanics, “was her ability to generate the most extra velocity in the final element of her put”. The last two champions Adams and Schwanitz were each missing due to maternity.
