Overview by IAAF   Olympic_Stadium_Amsterdam_1928.jpg
Williams was unfancied before Amsterdam but ran the best time of the second round when he equalled the Olympic record of 10.6. McAllister and London then won the semi-finals (both with 10.6), and for the final Williams, London & McAllister were drawn in lanes 3-5. The slender (1.75/57Kg) Williams started best with McAllister, but his pick-up was better than the others, and he pattered away to a clear (60cm) win, with the enormous (1.88/91Kg) London edging Lammers by inches. McAllister lost out on a medal after pulling a muscle 20m from the finish. The poor showing of the Americans was blamed by some on the heavy track, but the long journey by ship to Europe was a more likely culprit.

Summary by Sports-reference.com
The 1928 100 metre event was considered to be wide-open, with no consensus favorite. The best American was high school Frank Wykoff, who had won the Olympic Trials. There were several good Europeans, notably Jack London of Britain, and two Germans, Helmut Körnig and Georg Lammers. In the second round at Amsterdam, Percy Williams of Canada caught the eye of the track fans when he equaled the Olympic record with 10.6. The final opened with two false starts, first by South Africa’s Billie Legg and then one by Wykoff. Williams took the lead off the start and was never headed, winning the gold over London with Lammers third, Wykoff trailing in fourth. Two days later, Williams returned to win the 200 metres, the first non-American to complete the sprint double.
