Overview by IAAF 1932_olympic_stadium.jpg
Evenson set an Olympic record of 9:18.8 in the first heat, to be followed by Iso-Hollo’s 9:14.6, ahead of McCluskey (9:14.8). All three of the United States athletes ran under 9:20. Iso-Hollo took the lead in the final in the second lap, and built up a big lead over his pursuers – Evenson, Dawson and McCluskey. During the race the lap counter made an error, and as Iso-Hollo reached the finish (in 9:08.4) he was urged to run another 460m lap. Behind him, McCluskey reached 3000m in second place, but was overtaken by Evenson in the final lap. McCluskey was offered the chance of a re-run, but declined, stating that the official finishing line was the end of the race.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
The Finns were the dominant distance running nation, and were expected to provide the winner. They did so, with Volmari Iso-Hollo winning easily. As he came to the end of the 3,000 metres in the final, he had a large lead, but the lap counter had made a mistake, and all the runners ran an extra lap, thus the race was actually 3,460 metres. That made no difference to Iso-Hollo, but the silver and bronze medalists would have been different. At the end of the regulation distance, Joe McCluskey was in second place, but he was passed on the last lap by Britain’s Tom Evenson, who won the silver medal. McCluskey had set a world best at the US Olympic Trials shortly before the Olympics, running 9:14.5.
