Overview by IAAF |
Raisa Katyukova (URS) ran 4:03.20, a time beaten by only six other athletes in 1976, yet missed making the final, after placing sixth in her semi-final. The race was won by Klapezynski in 4:02.13, ahead of Shtereva (4:02.33) and Bragina (4:02.41). Kazankina, world record holder at 3:56.0, won the other semi in 4:07.37. Kazankina, the 800m gold medallist, was known to have the fastest kick, but she had been through five races in the previous seven days, and yet no-one wanted to set an honest pace to test the Russian. Nina Holmen (FIN) took the field through laps of 68.7 and 70.2 before Dorio took over. The Italian led until just before the the bell, reached in 3:08.1, at which point Bragina took over. The Russian was caught with 250m to go, and Hoffmeister and Klapezynski went past. Kazankina began to move up from sixth place, and flowed past the Germans with 50m to go, to win in 4:05.48 after a remarkably quick last lap of 56.9. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
Gunhild Hoffmeister (GDR), the 1972 silver medalist, had won the 1974 European Championships and was highly considered. But in June 1976, Soviet Tatyana Kazankina had shattered the world record with the first sub-4 time, 3:56.0, at a Soviet meeting. A few days before the 1,500 started she had won the 800 in world record time and was the favorite. With her 800 speed, she had the fastest kick, but for some reason, nobody set a fast pace in the final. Lying in the pack on the final backstretch she kicked around the final curve and passed Hoffmeister with 50 metres to go to complete the 800/1,500 double. |
