Overview by IAAF    1980_olympic_stadium.jpg
World record holder Koch, concentrating on the 400m, and European Champion Kondratyeva, who was injured in the 100m, did not start, leaving reigning champion Wöckel as favourite. Bochina was fastest in the preliminaries with 22.26 in round 2, and Ottey beat Wöckel 22.32 to 22.54 in the semi-finals. Wöckel had the misfortune to draw lane 1 in the final, but she ran a good bend, reaching the straight just ahead of Bochina and Ottey. She powered away early in the straight, and the 18 year-old Russian just dipped for the line ahead of Ottey to take silver. Wöckel became the third athlete to win this title from the most difficult lane, Blankers- Koen and Rudolph being the others.

Summary by Sports-reference.com
Marita Koch (GDR) had set three world records in 1978-79, but elected to compete only in the 400 in Moskva. The 1978 European Champion had been Lyudmila Kondratyeva (USSR) who had already won the 100 in Moskva, but withdrew from the 200 because of injuries she had sustained in that event. The top American was Evelyn Ashford, who had won the 1979 World Cup, but she was not present because of the American-led boycott. This left the favorite's role to the defending champion Bärbel Wöckel. She came thru to defend her gold medal, winning from lane one.
