Gallagher was fastest in the heats (2:00.37) and Lovin (1:59.29) and Dorio (1:59.53) the quickest in the second round. Dorio, a runner capable of winning from the front, took out the pace in the final, passing 200m in 27.7 and leading at halfway with 6m covering the field. Melinte took the lead at 550m, with Lovin and Gallagher quickest to react. The pre-race favourite – Klinger – was suffering with sciatica, and was never a factor. Melinte led by 3m into the straight, and went away to win by 7m, with Gallagher outkicking Lovin for the silver medal. The Romanian held off Dorio by 2m, with the Italian finishing well. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
The Soviet boycott crippled the level of competition in this event as all the best 800 metre runners in the world were from Eastern Europe. But Romania did compete in Los Angeles, and their runners became the favorites in the absence of the USSR, GDR, and Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia was of note because at the 1st Athletics World Championships in 1983, Jarmila Kratochvílová had won the 400/800 double, shortly after setting a world record of 1:53.28, which stood thru the end of the century. The final pace was set by Italy's Gabriella Dorio who led until 550 metres, when Doina Beşliu-Melinte (ROM) took over. She was chased to the line by American Kim Gallagher but never was caught. Dorio faded and the bronze medal went to Melinte's teammate, Fiţa Lovin. |

In the final, Kim Gallagher was the first to the break line but from there she was content to mark Doina Melinte. Impatient, Gabriella Dorio ran around the pair and out to a 2-meter lead. The gap was slowly eaten up over the next 300 metres, with Fiţa Lovin always present a step behind her Roumanian teammate. On the backstretch, Dorio began to falter and the two leaders edged past her. As she fell back through the pack, Lovin lost her step trying to avoid the slowing traffic. It was the same three leaders in the same order, chased by Margrit Klinger who strung out through the turn, separating from the rest, Dorio falling back to 6th place. Gallagher was perfectly positioned with clear sailing on the outside to sprint past Melinte, instead, Melinte just built on her lead, the gap widening to 4 metres by the finish. Loving couldn't make any progress on Gallagher and finished a couple of metres behind her. Coming off the final turn, Dorio squeezed inside of Lorraine Baker, crossed in front of her to get to the outside for a sprint to the finish, catching elbows with Klinger along the way. But Dorio was unable to catch Lovin for bronze. |
