Overview by IAAF  1992_olympic_stadium.jpg
Prior to 1992 Allan Wells had been the oldest winner of the Olympic 100m, aged 28. Linford Christie, a superbly built athlete who had only seriously concentrated on the event from the age of 26, made Wells seem juvenile, as he triumphed at the age of 32. In the first two rounds Christie (10.08), Burrell (10.07) and Fredericks (10.13) were the most impressive, and in the semi-finals Burrell looked even better, running 9.97 into a 1.3 wind ahead of Christie (10.00) and Mitchell (10.10). In the final Bruny Surin (0.124) had the fastest reaction time with Burrell (0.165) the slowest of the medal contenders. Surin led to 50m where he was caught by Fredericks and Christie. The Briton was clear by 60m reached in 6.44, and extended his margin to half a metre by the finish, with Fredericks holding off Mitchell for second, and Burrell a disappointing fifth. Stewart, in seventh place, became the first man ever to finish three Olympic 100m finals.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
The last five major international championships in the 100 had all been won by Carl Lewis – the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, and the 1983, 1987, and 1991 World Champinoships. But in both 1990 and 1991, Leroy Burrell (USA) was ranked as #1 in the world by Track & Field News. In 1990 he was chased by Britain’s Linford Christie, who won both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships. Lewis, hampered by a viral infection at the Trials, only made the US team in the long jump. Burrell and Dennis Mitchell both qualified for the 100. Burrell and Christie looked on top form in the prelims, with Burrell defeating Christie 9.97 to 10.00 in the semis into a headwind. But in the final, after two false starts, Burrell started very slowly and was never in the race. Christie won fairly comfortably with a charge in the last 50 metres. Namibia’s Frank Fredericks was second, and Mitchell won the bronze medal.

Results

These are the official results of the men's 100 metres event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. There were a total number of 81 participating athletes, with ten qualifying heats (three qualified plus two fastest losers).

The gold medal was won by Great Britain's Linford Christie, who had originally won the bronze medal in the scandal-ridden race in 1988 but was elevated to silver following the disqualification of gold medalist Ben Johnson. Silver went to Namibia's Frankie Fredericks, who also finished second in the 200 metres at the same Olympics. Dennis Mitchell of the United States of America won the bronze.

The two central figures of the 1988 fiasco did not appear in the final. Carl Lewis, the eventual gold medalist in 1988 and two-time defending gold medalist entering 1992, failed to qualify for the race at all. Ben Johnson did, making it to the semifinals before bowing out.
