Overview by IAAF  1992_olympic_stadium.jpg
Barbosa and Robb were fastest in the heats, each running 1:46.16 in separate races. The Briton edged Barbosa 1:45.25 to 1:45.32 in the swiftest of the three semis, with Gray (1:45.66) and Tanui (1:46.59) taking the other races. Gray, eager to improve a poor championship record, took out the pace in the final, passing 200m in 24.5, and reaching the bell in 49.99. Only Barbosa was close at 400m, with the favourite, Tanui, 5m back. Gray still led at 600m (1:17.6), but Barbosa caught Gray’s heel accidentally at 650m, disrupting his rhythm, just after Everett – the fastest 400m man in the field – stopped with a hamstring injury. Tanui, who had been 8m back at 500m (1:04.1 to Gray’s 1:03.0) closed to 3m at the 600m mark, and caught the American at 700m. At this point, Kiprotich was on Gray’s shoulder with Tanui on the outside. As the American faded, Tanui won the battle of the Kenyans. Gray hung on for a merited bronze.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
All the major titles since 1987 had been won by Kenyans. Billy Konchellah was the World Champion in 1987 and 1991, while Paul Ereng had won the 1988 Olympic gold medal, and Sammy Tirop had won the 1990 Commonwealth Games. Ereng was back in Barcelona but did finished last in the second semi-final. Nixon Kiprotich, finalist in 1988, was also back, with William Tanui the third Kenyan runner. The early leader in the final was American Johnny Gray, who passed 400 metres in a quick 49.99. Gray held that lead for much of the last lap, only faltering in the stretch as both Kenyan finalists shot by him with 50 metres to go. Tanui won the gold, outleaning Kiprotich in a close photo-finish (0.04 seconds).

Results
These are the official results of the men's 800 metres event at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. There were a total number of 63 participating athletes, with eight qualifying heats. Johnny Gray took the race out to the "Gray zone" running the first lap in 49.9 hoping to burn off the competition. His only follower was José Luiz Barbosa. It worked for most of the field, but the two Kenyans Nixon Kiprotich and William Tanui came from behind to run down the depleted front runners on the home stretch.
