Overview by IAAF  1992_olympic_stadium.jpg
Günthör was the favourite, having thrown 21.91 in June, but the Swiss only just made it to the stadium in time for the competition, having got lost in the city. Stulce, the athletic-looking putter from Texas A&M, a constant source of great throwers (Hooper, Matson, Barnes), smoothly opened with a personal best of 21.49. Stulce then improved to 21.58, as only squat (1.83/120Kg) Doehring and Lykho could approach 21m. Günthör was fifth after three rounds, with reigning champion Timmermann seventh; both improved – Timmermann to fifth with 20.49, and Günthör one place higher with 20.91 in the final round. Stulce continued to be the most impressive, finally reaching 21.70 in the fifth round, his third personal best of the day. Dismayingly, all three medallists had been banned for drug use before 1992.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
Switzerland’s Werner Günthör was again favored, having won the 1987 and 1991 World Championships. But he was below par and placed only fourth. American Mike Stulce was dominant, having the four longest throws of the event, and winning gold with 21.70 (71-2½). He won over teammates Jim Doehring, who threw 20.96 (68-9¼) in round two for the silver. Russian Vyacheslav Lykho had his two best throws in the first two rounds, getting bronze with 20.94 (68-8½). All three medalists were returning from doping suspensions. Stulce had tested positive for testosterone in March 1990, as did Doehring in December 1990. They were both banned for two years, but Doehring’s was lifted early, allowing him to compete in Barcelona. Lykho tested positive for stimulants in 1990 and served a three-month suspension.

Bronze medallist Vyacheslav Lykho had been stripped of his bronze medal won at the 1990 European Championships in Split due to a doping offence.[1] Despite this, they result from the Barcelona is officially accepted, because there is no known positive result from this games, and according to "innocent until caught at that moment" rule they can keep his medal.
