Overview by IAAF |

|
Alina Ivanova (RUS) and Svensson, the first two in the Tokyo world championships, were the two leaders at halfway, reached in 22:15. The hilly course and 26°C temperature did nothing to help a fast pace, and the climb back towards the stadium took its toll. With 1000m to go Chen and Li were leading, with Ivanova and Nikolayeva 30m behind. Chen had moved 20m ahead of her teammate, with Ivanova another 20m behind. The Russian put in a burst of speed which brought her a second red warning card, but also put her just in front of Chen. The Chinese woman applied pressure, and Ivanova, in trying to keep the lead, lifted again and was disqualified though she continued and crossed the line first. Li was passed by Salvador, who was also disqualified, with the result that Li won the bronze despite crossing the line in fifth place. |

This was the first walking competition for women at the Olympics. The day was very hot. The favorite was 1991 World Champion Alina Ivanova who led the early sections. With one kilometer left, the women had to ascend the hill of Montjuíc to the Estadi Olímpic. Chen Yueling and Li Chunxiu of China had the lead over Ivanova and her teammate Yelena Nikolayeva. As they entered the tunnel to the stadium, Ivanova made up the deficit and took the lead. With 150 metres left, she “sprinted” for the finish, however, and was disqualified for her third warning for lifting. Chen held on for the gold medal, with Nikolayeva second and Li earning the bronze. |

The Women's 10 km Walk at the 1992 Summer Olympics was held on August 3, 1992, in Barcelona, Spain. There were a total number of 44 competitors, with six athletes who were disqualified.
Inside the stadium, Alina Ivanova and Chen Yueling were locked in a tight battle. With 200 metres to go, Ivanova accelerated for what looked like would be a gold/bronze combination for the former Soviet athletes. Chen maintained her pace to stay ahead of Yelena Nikolayeva, sprinting to chase her down, pulling away from Chen's Chinese teammate Li Chunxiu. Well ahead, Ivanova bounded across the finish line in first, but her final sprint only earned her a disqualification. Ileana Salvador sprinted past Li at the line, also earning a disqualification, giving Chen the gold medal and China the gold/bronze combination. Chen also took the Olympic record in the first time Olympic event.
