Overview by IAAF |
Marie-Pierre Duros had the fastest qualifying time (8:42.32) and led for much of the first kilometre, run in a funereal 3:06. The Frenchwoman dropped out in the second kilometre, which was led by Alison Wyeth. The Briton passed 2000m in 6:00.6, and led to 2400m when her compatriot Murray made a break which was quickly covered. O’Sullivan took over from Murray with 300m to go, and was overtaken by Romanova’s decisive move off the final bend. Dorovskikh (formerly Samolenko) passed O’Sullivan on the inside with 70m to go, but had no chance of catching Romanova. The Russian ran out an easy winner after a last 200m in 28.2. Chalmers, boxed in for most of the last lap, finally escaped and caught O’Sullivan just before the line to win the bronze. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
Russian Tatyana Samolenko-Dorovskikh had been dominant in this event for the past few years, winning the 1988 Olympic gold, and the 1987 and 1991 World Championships. Yelena Romanova had been runner-up at the 1990 European Championship and the 1991 World Championships. The final was run in a languid 3:06 for the first kilometer. This led to a pack finish, with all the favorites together on the final backstretch. Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan led on the final turn, but Romanova jumped the field at the head of the stretch and was not caught, finally winning a major international title. Samolenko-Dorovskikh closed quickly for the silver but could not catch the Ukrainian. |
Records
These were the standing world and Olympic records (in minutes) prior to the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Tetyana Samolenko competes in this event after her marriage under the name Tetyana Dorovskikh.
