1992 Olympic Games Barcelona - Women's High jump

Host City: Barcelona, Spain Format: Top 12 and ties and all those clearing 1.92 metres advanced to the final.
Date Started: August 6, 1992
Date Finished: August 8, 1992
(Competitors: 41; Countries: 26; Finalists: 16)
Venue(s): Montjuïc Olympic Stadium, Barcelona
Overview by IAAF
Only Henkel (2.07i) and Kostadinova (2.05i) had gone higher than 2m in 1992, and were considered to be well ahead of the rest. At 1.97, six jumpers remained, with Henkel, Astafei and Kostadinova leading. Only Astafei cleared first time, and Quintero then made the height second time around. The apron area which had affected the men’s event seemed to be even more detrimental to the women. At the final attempt Henkel soared over, but Kostadinova failed badly after two close attempts. At 2.00 Henkel retained her equilibrium with a first time clearance and Astafei, who would compete for Germany two years later, also cleared, equalling her best ever. Quintero passed her last jump at 2.00, gambled at 2.02, but missed that height. Henkel needed to clear 2.02, and made it with 5cm to spare and thus won the gold.
Summary by Sports-reference.com
By 1992, Stefka Kostadinova was not quite as dominant as she had been in 1988. She had struggled with injuries and the last two majors meets – 1990 Europeans and 1991 Worlds – had been won by Germany's Heike Henkel. They were the two favorites. Only five jumpers cleared 1.94 (6-4¼) while Henkel passed to 1.97 metres (6-5½), leaving six to contest that height. Romania's Galina Astafei took the lead with a first jump clearance of 1.97 (6-5½), while Kostadinova failed her attempts and was out of the medals. Only three were still alive, Astafei, Ioamnet Quintero (CUB) with a second-jump clearance, and Henkel, who struggled, but got over on her last try. Both Henkel and Astafei succeeded at two metres, Astafei still leading as she had not yet missed. But Henkel won the gold medal with a first-jump clearance at 2.02 (6-7½), leaving Astafei in second and Quintero in third.
