Overview by IAAF |
No athlete was under as much pressure as Cathy Freeman in Sydney, who lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony 10 days before the 400m final. Silver medallist in 1996, Freeman had won both World titles in the intervening four years, and had lost just one race at 400m in the 1997-2000 period. Here she was fastest in the second round (50.31) and semi-finals (50.01), but the expectations of the home nation is enormous pressure for one athlete to bear. Indeed, the prospect of taking on Freeman proved too much for defending champion Pérec, who fled Sydney before the first round and after she had been declared to start in the fifth heat. Guevara (50.11), Ogunkoya (50.18) and Fraser (50.21) followed Freeman home in the semi-final, while Graham won the other race (50.28) ahead of Merry (50.32). In the final, Graham was out quickest and led by 3m from Freeman and Merry at halfway. The Briton ran the best curve, and was 0.1 behind Graham’s 35.9 at 300m, with Freeman another tenth back. Freeman went ahead with 75m to go, and drew away to win by 4m from Graham, with Merry just holding on for bronze ahead of the fastfinishing Fraser. Freeman – dressed in a full body suit complete with hood – crossed the line and then sat down on the track, overwhelmed by the 112, 524- strong crowd’s reaction, and relieved that the race was over. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
The two-time defending champion, France's Marie-José Pérec, was entered but left Sydney in the early days of the Olympics, slinking away to the airport in a mysterious sequence of events. But she was not favored in 2000, at any rate. That fell to the true native Australian Cathy Freeman, who had won the silver medal in 1996 and was World Champion in 1997 and 1999. The Australian Olympic Organizing Committee (ACOG) also chose her to light the Olympic Flame at the opening ceremony. Further, with Australia attempting to make amends for its historically poor treatment of Aboriginals, Freeman was a symbol to her people. She had lost only one race since 1997 and was almost crushed by the expectations of the Australian people and media. But she came through. She trailed in the final through 200 metres, but closed on the final curve to pull almost even with Jamaica's Lorraine Graham. But Freeman had the lead with 70 metres left, and pulled away to win easily, with four metres between her and Graham. |
