Overview by IAAF |
Maria Mutola had won five world titles at 800m indoors and out, but in three previous Olympic appearances had managed one bronze medal. Though favourite she was regarded as fallible, having occupied the same position in 1996. Strong Stephanie Graf was fastest in the preliminary rounds with 1:58.39 and 1:57.56, while Mutola won her races in 1:59.88 and 1:58.86. Lyudmila Formanová, the reigning World Champion indoors and out, failed to finish her heat. Fuchsová set the early pace in the final, passing 200m in 26.4 and halfway in 55.04, the fastest ever in a global championship final. Holmes went into the lead just after 600m reached in 1:25.5 by Fuchsová, with Mutola and Graf close behind. Mutola took the lead at the beginning of the home straight, and steadily drew clear to win by 4m from Graf, who edged by Holmes in the last 10m. |

Summary by Sports-reference.com |
Maria Mutola had won three world indoor titles, but had struggled at major outdoor internationals, despite often being favored. She was competing in her fourth Olympics, but her only medal had been a bronze in 1996. The 1999 World Champion had been Czech athlete Ludmila Formanová but she withdrew in round one with an injured ankle. The final pace was set by Czech Helena Fuchsová who led thru 400 metres in a rapid 55.04. Britain's Kelly Holmes went into the lead at 600 metres, trailed by Mutola and Austria's Steffi Graf. Mutola moved into the lead off the final turn and pulled away to win by four metres, with Graf getting silver and Holmes the bronze. Mutola had ended her big-meet jinx and would win the 2001 and 2003 World Championships. This was the first ever gold medal won for Mozambique. |

The top three runners in each semi-final automatically qualified for the final. The next two fastest runners from across the heats also qualified for the final.
There were a total number of 39 participating athletes.
In the final, Helena Fuchsova took her lane 1 position out to the lead, with Brigita Langerholc sweeping across the track from lane 8 to shut the door on Hazel Clark and the rest of the pack. Fuchsova held the lead through a 55.04 first lap and on to 600 metres in 1:25.5. Behind her the pack scrambled for position with Kelly Holmes on Fuchsova's shoulder. Holmes, then Maria Mutola, then Stephanie Graf all passed on the final turn. On the final straightaway, Mutola rans strong on the outside, advancing past Holmes, with Graf sprinting past for silver. Four years later, it would be reversed, with Holmes running past Mutoloa on the final straight.
