Summary by Sports-reference.com

Kenya'€™s [Eliud Kipchoge] had once been a premier track runner, primarily over 5,000 metres, winning gold in that event at the 2003 World Championships, silver medals at the 2008 Olympics and 2007 Worlds, and a bronze at the 2004 Olympics. After failing to make the 2012 Kenyan Olympic team, he moved to the road and quickly became almost unbeatable at the marathon. From 2013-16 he won six major city marathons, winning all except the 2013 Berlin Marathon, and breaking 2-05 four times. He came to Rio as a clear favorite, but Olympic marathon favorites have not usually fared well.

The heat and humidity on the last day of the Olympics kept the pace slow, as is usual in the Olympic marathon. At 30K Kipchoge picked up the pace and strung out the field, leaving only two runners by his side with 10 km remaining, American [Galen Rupp], silver medalist in the London 10K, who had only run his first marathon at the US Olympic Trials, and Ethiopian [Feyisa Lilesa]. Kipchoge surged again at 35K and Rupp could not maintain the pace, with Lelisa struggling to stay close. With 6 km remaining Kipchoge was alone, the gold medal decided if disaster did not strike. It did not and the Kenyan won the gold by 1:10 over Lilesa, who was 11 seconds ahead of Rupp, who was closing the margin, but ran out of ground.

In early May 2017, Kipchoge ran a trial race, staged by Nike, in an attempt to break the 2-hour barrier for the marathon. The two other participants in the race were Ethiopian Lelisa Desisa and Eritrean [Zersenay Tadesse]. The event was held on the Monza race track in Italy, with designated pacers entering the event planned stages. The runners ran behind a pace vehicle, designed to keep them on the ideal pace, but it also provided drafting protection, one of the factors keeping the event from being eligible for record consideration. Drinks were handed to the runners, as needed, by helpers on bicycles, another move that made it ineligible for a record. Finally, all three marathoners wore newly designed, special Nike shoes, and there was some question about their legality for record purposes. In the end, only Kipchoge came close to the barrier, running a '€œfastest on record'€ time of 2-00:25, although it was not considered for a world best time, because of the problems noted above.

Summary by Wikipedia

The race began at the Sambódromo in a light rain, with temperatures about 24 °C (75 °F). The field size of 155 starters was an Olympic Games record as well as the 140 finishers. The previous record was 124 starters and 111 finishers at the 1996 Olympic marathon in Atlanta. The 2016 race also had the most countries represented of any Olympic marathon and despite the weather conditions a record 62 men finished under 2:20:00 to show the quality and depth of the field.

The lead pack jogged comfortably through almost the first 15 kilometers, when Eliud Kipchoge injected a little speed into the race. By that point the pack was 62 men, that went from a line across the street shoulder to shoulder to a string chasing the leader. 46 still were hanging onto the lead group at the halfway point. Nine more dropped off by 25K. Over the next 5K, the pace gradually increased, losing the defending champion Stephen Kiprotich and reigning world champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, though Ghebreslassie was hanging on off the back. At 30K there were only 8 still running together at the front. Lemi Berhanu seemed to be leading the increase of speed, calling back for his teammate Feyisa Lilesa to keep up. Within 2 km, the lead pack was down to four, the two Ethiopians, Kipchoge and Galen Rupp. In the next kilometer, Berhanu fell off the back. By 33K, the medalists were decided. At 35K, Rupp was just behind Lilesa and Kipchoge. Rupp lost contact at the following water station. Shortly after losing Rupp, Lilesa was immediately behind Kipchoge and apparently clipped his heels. Kipchoge was angry, motioning to Lilesa to run next to him, to use the rest of the street. Lilesa didn't respond, Kipchoge accelerated away. From that point, as the course snaked around buildings, the three leaders lost sight of each other as the gaps between them increased. Slightly less than a minute behind the leaders, Ghebreslassie was speeding past the other stragglers. At 40K, Kipchoge had 36 seconds over Lilesa, Rupp another 12 seconds back and Ghebreslassie 59 seconds behind Rupp. Over the lengthy straight finish, Kipchoge expanded his lead to 1:10, giving the thumbs up to the crowd as he finished at 2:08:44. Lilesa struggled but still held 11 seconds ahead of Rupp. Lilesa crossed his arms several time before crossing the finish line at 2:09:54 in solidarity of the protests of his ethnic Oromo people. Rupp finished at 2:10:05 still 59 seconds up on Ghebreslassie.

Eliud Kipchoge had previously won medals on the track in 2004 and 2008; this race marked the continuation of his successful transition to the marathon distance. The difference between this and his last half marathon was 1:02:49. Kipchoge was the only Kenyan finisher in the marathon.

The sky remained overcast throughout the race. The streets remained wet. As Athens 2004 silver medalist Meb Keflezighi, aged 41, was about to cross the finish line in thirty-third place, he slipped. Head and shoulders crossing the finish line, he did a couple of push ups on the ground before righting himself and walking over the line. Later Mohammad Jafar Moradi's hamstring seized up before he reached the finish line. He ended up crawling across the line unassisted. Federico Bruno also cramped up before the entrance of the Sambadrome. He had to finish the entire distance hopping sideways. Derlis Ayala stopped several times to assist Bruno.

The gifts were presented by Abby Hoffman, Council Member of the IAAF immediately after the race. At the closing ceremony, the athletes were presented with the medals by Thomas Bach, IOC President and Sebastian Coe, President of the IAAF.

Note that Abdelmajid El Hissouf (originally 68th) was found guilty of a doping offence by the IAAF in 2017, and his sanction resulted in the annulment of this result; all those finishing behind him should be moved up one place.

Demonstration

Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia was the silver medalist and as he neared the line he crossed his arms above his head – a political gesture in solidarity with Oromo protests in Ethiopia. After the race he stated: "the Ethiopian government is killing my people so I stand with all protests anywhere as Oromo is my tribe. My relatives are in prison and if they talk about democratic rights they are killed."

Report: men's marathon – Rio 2016 Olympic Games

Eliud Kipchoge confirmed his status as the most commanding marathon runner of the current generation when he produced a superb run over the final 15 kilometres to fulfil his status as many people’s favourite for the gold medal by winning in 2:08:44.

The statistics about Kipchoge in the context of this race can be just reeled off.

He had the biggest Olympic winning margin since Frank Shorter won in 1972; he has now won seven of his eight marathons since his debut at the 2013 Hamburg Marathon, all of them high class races; he added Olympic gold to his 5000m title at the 2003 World Championships as an 18-year-old, a 13-year-gap between his global titles, current bookends of a long and illustrious career that is far from over.

However, perhaps the most telling one about his Rio run that gives a quick demonstration of how he won the race is that he ran the second half of the race more than three minutes faster than the first, 1:05:55 and 1:02:49, a negative split no other runner could match by a long way.

"It was a championship and it was a bit slow so I decided to take over," said a thrilled Kipchoge. "Maybe it was the rain, maybe not. Everyone wants a medal. I was coming here for gold. This is history, the first time the women and the men win (from the same nation at the same Olympics) and it is the best moment of my life."

The opening half of the race was conducted with the rain falling; most of the Kenyan and Ethiopian runners unusually, for them, wearing hats to keep the precipitation out of their eyes.

The opening 5km after the gun went in Sambodromo was in a relaxed 15:31.

The 10km checkpoint was passed in 31:08 with world champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea at the front of a big leading group. There were still more than 60 runners – and all the expected main contenders – within 10 seconds of the lead at this point.

Pre-race favourite and London Marathon winner Kipchoge started to show at the front regularly during the next five kilometres and 15km was passed in 46:53.

Easy first half

Very little of substance happened during the next five kilometres as the pace remained steady and on for a finish about 2:11:00 – with the expectation that there was going to be a negative split at this pace – with 20km passed in 1:02:77 and 48 men still spread within 10 seconds from the lead.

The halfway point was reached in 1:05:55 and 25km in 1:18:12 with 37 men still within 10 seconds of the lead at this point.

Shortly afterwards, one of the expected medal contenders, Ethiopia’s 2016 Dubai Marathon winner Tesfaye Abera, stepped to the side of the road and retired.

At about 27 kilometres, the Kenyan trio of Kipchoge, Wesley Korir and Stanley Biwott – who had been working together and clearly communicating during the race up to this point – started to surge and the leading pack quickly slimmed down to nine over the next two kilometres with 30km passed in 1:33:15.

Kipchoge made his decisive move and started to crank up the pace. By 32km, the leading group was down to four: Kipchoge, Ethiopian pair Feyisa Lelisa and Lemi Berhanu as well as USA’s Galen Rupp, who had only run one marathon before today at the US Olympic Trials in February and who finished fifth in the 10,000m eight days ago.

Berhanu started to fall back just before 34km but the other three, with Kipchoge dictating the tempo, stayed together through 35km in 1:47:40.

Rup was the next to fall back shortly after this checkpoint. A little further down the road, a small but significant incident occurred.

Just before 36km, Kipchoge motioned Lelisa to take up some of the running but must have seen that although the Ethiopian was on his shoulder, he was having to work hard to stay with him.

It’s impossible to say for sure what went through Kipchoge’s mind, but within 100 metres or so he surged again, clearly recognising that this was the moment when he could make his bid for glory.

Kipchoge makes decisive move

A gap soon appeared between the leading pair and with Kipchoge’s track record, the gold seemed to be as good as his as Lelisa and Rupp were faced with the challenge of hanging on to take their place alongside him on the podium.

Kipchoge passed 40km in 2:02:24 with Lelisa 36 seconds back and Rupp another 12 seconds in arrears

The gap continued to grow in the final two kilometres.

Somewhat unnecessarily, with the line in sight, Kipchoge started to look around in the last 400 metres of the race but he would not have seen Lelisa or anyone else as they had still not gone around the final bend.

His uncertainty assuaged, in the final 200 metres he put on a spurt for the line before easing up and giving the thumbs up to the crowds in the stands in the Sambodromo, getting the greatest athletics triumph of his life in the slowest marathon time of his career.

Lelisa trudged tiredly home 1:10 behind Kipchoge, crossing the line in 2:09:54, but still had enough in the tank to hold off Rupp by 11 seconds.

Rupp was unable to close the gap but got his bronze medal in a personal best of 2:10:05 while Ghebreslasssie finished fourth in 2:11:04.

Among the record 140 finishers, 2012 Olympic champion and 2013 world champion Stephen Kiprotich was 14th.
