Summary
The French dominated this event, placing three fencers in the final and sweeping the medals. The gold medalist, [Gaston Alibert], was particularly impressive. In 25 matches, he had 20 outright wins, and five ties, or double hits. He was never defeated during the individual Épée tournament. He also helped France win a gold medal in the team Épée. In that event, he fought 12 matches, winning 11 and losing 1. Alibert never again competed at the Olympics. He was killed fighting during World War I.

The first round was conducted in round-robin format, to one touch. Pool sizes ranged from 5 to 8 fencers. Double-touches counted against both fencers. The three contestants who had been struck the fewest times advanced. |

Pool D
The fourth pool had 8 fencers. Berger was clearly the best of the crowd, going untouched in his seven bouts. When five different fencers tied for second place at 4 touches against apiece, a playoff round-robin was held. The first playoff eliminated only one fencer, with the remaining four again tying and forcing a second playoff.
That round resulted in Holt and Tvrzský tying at 1 touch apiece, eliminating the other two fencers.

Men's Sabre, Individual
|
Host City: London, Great Britain Venue(s): Fencing Ground just outside White City Stadium, London Date Started: July 17, 1908 Date Finished: July 24, 1908
Competitors76from 11 nations
|
Summary
[JenÅ Fuchs] won his first gold medal in this event. He would eventually win four Olympic gold medals in sabre fencing - 1908 individual and team, and 1912 individual and team. Fuchs was also a top ranked rower and bobsledder in Hungary.
Fuchs' individual victory began the Hungarian streak in this event. From 1908 through 1964 a Hungarian fencer always won the sabre gold medal at the Olympics, with the exception of 1920, when Hungary was not invited as they were considered an aggressor nation in World War I. Hungarians also won all the world championships in individual sabre from 1923 through 1937 and, after World War II, 1951-55.

Summary
With the gold and silver medalist from the individual event, the Hungarians were particularly dominant in the team sabre competition. They won their opening match over Germany by 9-0, and the Official Report noted that nobody could remember a team fencing match in which one team never scored a hit.
This victory began the Hungarian streak of dominance in team sabre fencing at the Olympics. Hungary won all the gold medals in this event at the Olympics from 1908-1960, except for 1920 when the nation was not invited because of its role in World War I. David Wallechinsky has pointed out that Hungary won 46 consecutive matches during this streak. Hungary has also been dominant in the team sabre at the world championships. World championships in the team sabre began in 1930, and were held through the 1950's in non-Olympic years. Hungary won the title in 1930-31, 1933-35, 1937, 1951, 1953-55, and 1957-58, failing to win the title only in 1938, 1947, and 1949-50.

Silver medal match
The winner took the silver medal, with loser receiving bronze. The Bohemian team refused to play the match, arguing that as finalists they had already secured second place. The organizing committee awarded silver medals to Italy, relegating the Bohemian team to bronze medals.
