Overview

The fencing matches were held during the "main" portion of the Olympics, i.e., while the Stadium events were being contested. However, they were held outside of the Stadium, although nearby, at a site described as "the fencing ground of the Franco-British Exposition." There were four events: Épée for individuals and teams, and sabre for individuals and teams. As would be expected, the French dominated the two Épée events, sweeping the individual medals, and the Hungarians dominated the sabre, beginning their Olympic dominance in that event.

At the 1908 Summer Olympics, four fencing events were contested.

The 1908 Games were the first to lack a foil competition. Foil fencing, "not being in the opinion of the organisers a form of sport which is improved by competition,[1]" was held only as a display. The 1908 Olympics did introduce team sabre and épée competitions. As in the 1904 edition, the London Games held no events for masters; all fencing was done by amateurs.

Summary

The French dominated this event, placing three fencers in the final and sweeping the medals. The gold medalist, [Gaston Alibert], was particularly impressive. In 25 matches, he had 20 outright wins, and five ties, or double hits. He was never defeated during the individual Épée tournament. He also helped France win a gold medal in the team Épée. In that event, he fought 12 matches, winning 11 and losing 1. Alibert never again competed at the Olympics. He was killed fighting during World War I.

Final

The final resulted in Alibert taking the championship after again hitting all opponents, though he suffered another pair of double-touches. There was a three-way tie for second place between two Frenchman and Montgomerie of the British team.

Men's Sabre, Individual

Summary

[Jenő Fuchs] won his first gold medal in this event. He would eventually win four Olympic gold medals in sabre fencing - 1908 individual and team, and 1912 individual and team. Fuchs was also a top ranked rower and bobsledder in Hungary.

Fuchs' individual victory began the Hungarian streak in this event. From 1908 through 1964 a Hungarian fencer always won the sabre gold medal at the Olympics, with the exception of 1920, when Hungary was not invited as they were considered an aggressor nation in World War I. Hungarians also won all the world championships in individual sabre from 1923 through 1937 and, after World War II, 1951-55.

Final

Fuchs and de Lobsdorf did not finish within the time limit, resulting in a loss for both of them.

Men's Sabre, Team

Host City: London, Great Britain
Venue(s): Fencing Ground just outside White City Stadium, London
Date Started: July 21, 1908
Date Finished: July 24, 1908
Format: Single-elimination tournament with Bergvall system.

Competitors35from 8 nations

Summary

With the gold and silver medalist from the individual event, the Hungarians were particularly dominant in the team sabre competition. They won their opening match over Germany by 9-0, and the Official Report noted that nobody could remember a team fencing match in which one team never scored a hit.

This victory began the Hungarian streak of dominance in team sabre fencing at the Olympics. Hungary won all the gold medals in this event at the Olympics from 1908-1960, except for 1920 when the nation was not invited because of its role in World War I. David Wallechinsky has pointed out that Hungary won 46 consecutive matches during this streak. Hungary has also been dominant in the team sabre at the world championships. World championships in the team sabre began in 1930, and were held through the 1950's in non-Olympic years. Hungary won the title in 1930-31, 1933-35, 1937, 1951, 1953-55, and 1957-58, failing to win the title only in 1938, 1947, and 1949-50.
