Overview

Fencing was an extremely popular sport in Belgium in 1920 and the fencing events drew large crowds to the Gardens de la Palace d’Egmont, situated near the Beerschot Stadium. The event were scheduled to be held outdoors, but because of rain, many of the pools were moved indoors to a “hall with a linoleum floor.”

The 1920 fencing events were well contested and were a showcase for the talents of the Italian star, Nedo Nadi. Nadi competed in five events at Antwerp and won gold medals in all five. Through 2004, only Mark Spitz (USA) with 7 swim golds at Munich in 1972, Kristin Otto (GDR), with 6 swim golds at Seoul in 1988, Vitaly Shcherbo (EUN), with 6 gymnastics golds in 1992, and Michael Phelps (USA), with 6 swim golds in 2004, have won more gold medals at a single Olympics than Nedo Nadi. Nadi did not compete in the individual épée event. Nadi’s brother, Aldo, also competed in Antwerp. Aldo Nadi won three gold medals in the team events and an individual silver medal behind his brother in the sabre event.

The men's foil was a fencing event held as part of the Fencing at the 1920 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fifth appearance of the event. Nedo Nadi repeated as Olympic champion, retaining the title he initially won at the 1912 Summer Olympics.

A total of 56 fencers from 10 nations competed in the event, which was held on August 17 and August 18, 1920.

The Italian foil team was led by the Nadi brothers, [Aldo] and [Nedo], and won the gold medal quite easily. Italy won all eight of its matches. Its only close match in the final was against France, which it defeated 9-7. At the 1919 Inter-Allied Championships, the result was reversed, with France defeating Italy in the final on touches 127-125, after they had tied in bouts at 18 each.

Summary

This was the only fencing event at the 1920 Olympics at which [Nedo Nadi] did not win a gold medal. The event was won by France’s [Armand Massard]. Massard returned again in 1924 at Paris, finishing fifth in individual épée. The 1919 Inter-Allied épée had been won by France’s E. H. Laurent, who did not compete at Antwerp. The runner-up in 1919 was Portugal’s [Jorge de Paiva], who made the finals in Antwerp, but finished last of the finalists.

The men's épée was a fencing event held as part of the fencing at the 1920 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fifth appearance of the event. Of the six fencing events, the only one in which Nedo Nadi did not win a gold medal was the one in which he did not compete. Instead, a trio of Frenchmen swept the medals.

A total of 80 fencers from 13 nations competed in the event, which was held on August 22 and 23, 1920.

Summary

The sabre competition was missing the Hungarian fencers, because their country was not invited to the Olympics due to their role in World War I. Hungarian fencers had dominated the sabre events at London in 1908 and Stockholm in 1912. Hungary remained the dominant nation in sabre fencing through 1968. At the 1924 Olympics in Paris, Hungary began a winning streak in team sabre which did not end until 1964 and included 46 consecutive match wins and 7 consecutive gold medals. In Hungary’s absence, Italy won the team sabre event in 1920. It should be noted, however, that Italy was also quite good at this discipline, as they won the team sabre at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, even with Hungary competing, and Italy had also won the championship at the 1919 Inter-Allied Games.
