Overview

The program was the same as in 1948. The track events were the kilometer time trial, match sprint, tandem match sprint, and the team pursuit, and were held at the Helsinki Velodrome. Unlike many of the events in Helsinki, track cycling did not draw large crowds. The road event was conducted as a mass start race of 190.4 km., with 17 laps of an 11.2 km. course, beginning and ending at Käpylä. The team road race consisted of four riders on each team, the best three times to count towards the team time.

The cycling competition at the 1952 Summer Olympics consisted of two road cycling events and four track cycling events, all for men only. 215 cyclists from 36 countries competed in the six events

Summary

The 1952 Olympic road race was contested over 17 laps of an 11.2 km. course, which was on Koskelantie Street in Käpyla. The course was not overly difficult in terms of climbs, but had few flat sections, consisting of rolling hills throughout. The Belgian riders rode as a team and on the 11th lap, they broke away, accompanied by [Edi Ziegler] of Germany, and [Jules Maenen] of the Netherlands. Maenen held on for three laps but was dropped by the Belgians – [André Noyelle], [Robert Grondelaers], and [Lucien Victor]. At the start of the final lap, Noyelle dropped the other three leaders and opened up a big lead quickly. He held on to win the gold medal. With five kilometers remaining, Grondelaers broke Ziegler and Victor, and rode on to the silver medal. The Belgian medal sweep was ruined when Ziegler outsprinted Victor.

The Men's Individual Road Race at the 1952 Summer Olympics was held on 2 August, the 2nd last day of the Olympics on an 11,2 km course running counter-clockwise from Käpylä through Pakila and Maunula and back to Käpylä. The course was circled seventeen times, so the total length of the competition was 190,4 km. About half of the road was hard-surfaced, the other half sand-surfaced.

There were 154 entries from 31 nations and 112 participants from 30 nations

Summary

With [Russell Mockridge] (AUS) opting to compete in only the kilo and the tandem, Italy's [Enzo Sacchi] became the heavy favorite. Sacchi was World Champion in 1951 and would win the world title later in 1952 as well. For the first time since 1928, all matches were only a single race, rather than racing the medal rounds as best two of three. Twenty-seven cyclists came to the line in the first round. There were eight first round heats and four Repechages to qualify 12 riders for four quarter-finals. The second quarter-final Repechage had four competitors – [Antonio Giménez], [Béla Szekeres], [Stéphan Martens], and [Franck le Normand]. Giménez led on the last turn when le Normand attempted to come around the pack, only to catch the rear wheel of Martens, with both of them going to the track. A re-race was ordered but le Normand could not compete and was taken to the hospital. Martens did start the re-race but could not put up much a battle, as the race was won by Giménez.

Two semi-finals qualified Sacchi and Australia's [Lionel Cox] for the final. [Werner Potzernheim] (GER) also made the final via a Repechage after the semis. Sacchi won the final by what the 1952 Official Report termed a "narrow, but safe margin". Cox placed second and the bronze went to Potzernheim. Potzernheim would again win sprint bronze at the 1954 World Championships. Sacchi turned professional after the Olympics, and competed until 1965. He never managed a professional world title, but in the sprint was second in 1953, third in 1954, and again second in 1958. Shortly after the final of the sprint, Cox teamed with Mockridge to win the tandem sprint gold medal.

Summary

[Russell Mockridge] first competed at the Olympics in 1948, placing 26th, and then in 1950 won gold medals in the sprint and kilo time trial at the British Empire Games. He briefly retired but came back to place second at the 1951 World Championships in the sprint. A few months before the Helsinki Olympics, Mockridge competed at the Grand Prix de Paris sprint title, the world’s top invitational event, and became the first amateur to win the open title at that event. He did not race in the sprint at Helsinki, choosing to concentrate on the time trial and the tandem. In the kilo, starting 20th, he won easily, with a margin of 1.6 seconds over Italy’s [Marino Morettini], who was the next-to-last to start. Mockridge would return to win a second gold medal in the tandem, accompanied by [Lionel Cox]. With Mockridge not in the event, Cox would also win a silver in the match sprint. Morettini had been third in the sprint at the 1951 World Championships, would place second in that event in 1952, and became World Champion in 1953.

These are the official results of the Men's 1.000 m Time Trial at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland held on July 31, 1952. There were a total number of 27 participants

Summary

This was the final track event of the 1952 Olympics, the final following shortly after the match sprint final. Fourteen teams started the event. The semi-finals came down to Australia against Italy, and South Africa against France. But South Africa had a walkover, as the French team of [Franck le Normand] and [Robert Vidal] could not compete. Le Normand had taken a bad fall in the sprint quarter-final Repechages earlier in the day, and was taken to the hospital. The Australian team was [Lionel Cox] and [Russell Mockridge], who had only ridden together once prior to the Olympics. But they were formidable – Mockridge won the kilometer time trial and Cox was silver medalist in the sprint. The Italian tandem was [Cesare Pinarello] and [Antonio Maspes], also a very formidable team. Pinarello would place second in the sprint at the 1953 World Championships. Maspes turned professional in 1954 and won seven World Championships in the sprint – 1955-56, 1959-62, and 1964. In the semi, Pinarello and Maspes were no match for the Australians, but they won the bronze medal in a walkover, when France could again not come to the mark. The final was a virtual walkover for Cox and Mockridge, who easily won the race over South Africa for the gold medal.

Russell Mockridge turned professional late in 1953. He won several six-day races and managed to finish the 1955 Tour de France. He was unmatched in Australia, winning 12 consecutive national titles. In 1958 he was killed when struck by a bus while riding in the Tour of Gippsland race.

These are the official results of the Men's 2.000m Tandem Race at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, held from July 28 to July 31, 1952. There were fourteen couples participating in this competition

Summary

This was the first track event of the 1952 Olympics. Twenty-two teams competed in qualifying with eight advancing to the quarter-finals. The semi-finals came down to Italy against Great Britain, and South Africa against France. Italy won the first semi in a fast time, leading Britain by 3.7 seconds. In the second semi, two French riders fell off the pace on the last lap and South Africa was declared the winner. Italy rode away from South Africa in the final, winning easily. The bronze medal race was very close, with Britain declared the winner – the fifth straight bronze medal for Great Britain in this event. They would extend that string to six in 1956. France had won the gold medal in 1936 and 1948, while Italy had won the previous four Olympic titles, going back to 1920. Italy was led by [Marino Morettini], who also won silver in the kilometer, and would later become World Champion in the sprint in 1953.

These are the official results of the Men's 4.000m Team Pursuit at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, held on July 28 and July 29, 1952. There were 89 participant from 22 nations. In the first round each team raced alone, with the first eight teams qualifying for the quarterfinals
