Overview

The 1976 Olympic cycling program saw one change from 1972. The tandem sprint had been dropped from the Olympic Program, after having been contested since 1906 – save for 1912 when there were no track events. There were four track events in Montreal – kilometer time trial, match sprint, tandem match sprint, individual pursuit, and team pursuit, all raced at the Olympic Velodrome. For the first time ever at the Olympics, this was an indoor velodrome, which would later become standard. But in 1976, it was new and the times were much faster than racing outdoors, without the influence of the weather. As in 1972, the track length was 285.714 metres, or 3½ laps to the kilometer. The individual road race was a mass start race of 177.49 km., raced on the Mont Royal Circuit. The team time trial was 100 km., with four-man teams, raced on the Trans-Canada Highway, termed the Fairview Circuit.

The cycling competition at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal consisted of two road cycling events and four track cycling events, all for men only. The 2000m tandem event, contested at the previous 13 Games since 1908, was dropped from the Olympic cycling program

Summary

The course was 177.49 km. over the hilly Mont-Royal Circuit. The course had been used for the 1974 World Championships and the favorite was probably [Ryszard Szurkowski] of Poland, who was 1973 World Champion and had placed second on the course in 1974. The 1974 champion was his teammate, Janusz Kowalski, but he did not compete in Montreal. On the sixth lap, a group of 10 riders got away, and formed the winning group. On the last lap, [Bernt Johansson] was able to successfully break away and won the gold medal by 31 seconds. The winner of the sprint for the silver was [Peter Thaler], but he was relegated to ninth place for interfering with other riders in the sprint and failing to keep his line. The final sprint included an American, [George Mount], unusual for that era, who finished sixth. Szurkowski had missed the winning break and finished 12th, among the leaders of the trailing sprint. Of the three medalists, only Johansson would have a notable pro career. His best performance came in the 1979 Giro d’Italia, in which he placed third and won two stages.

These are the official results of the Men's Individual Road Race at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, held on 26 July 1976. Fifty-eight cyclists finished the race

Summary

The team time trial began the Olympic cycling program, which had become standard by 1976. The race started near a shopping center in Fairview, Quebec, and was raced over the Trans-Canada Highway. Poland had won the 1975 World Championships, with the Soviet Union second. But at the Montreal Olympics, the two teams reversed position, the USSR winning gold with a 20-second margin over the Poles. The Soviet and Polish teams both had the same four riders that had raced in 1975 and the same four riders would return in 1977 to win another World Championship for the Soviet Union.

The men's team time trial event was part of the road cycling programme at the 1976 Summer Olympics. The venue for this event was the Mont-Royal Park, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

Summary

[Daniel Morelon] (FRA) had been the best sprinter since the mid-60s, winning the 1968 and 1972 gold medals, and seven World Championships. He made it to the finals unbeaten, where he faced the 1974 World Champion, Czechoslovakia’s [Anton Tkac]. Tkac won the first race easily with the fastest sprint time of the competition, 10.78, but Morelon came back to win the second race. In the decider, Tkac jumped early and opened a five-length lead that Morelon could not overcome. The bronze medal race was won by the GDR’s [Hans-Jurgen Geschke], who began a long line of great East German sprinters. He would win the 1977 World Championship while Tkac would come back in 1978 to win a second world title. Morelon effectively retired after 1976, although he raced briefly in 1977 and won the Grand Prix de Paris. He ended his Olympic career with five medals – four in the sprint and gold in the 1968 tandem. One new feature in 1976 was that the losing quarter-finalists competed in a four-up race to determine the fifth thru eighth placements.

These are the results of the Men's 1 km Sprint at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, held from 21 to 24 July 1976. There were twenty-five participants

Summary

The early leader was Belgium’s 18-year-old national champion [Michel Vaarten]. When defending champion [Niels Fredborg] (DEN) came in slower, his chances for a medal seemed good. But the last two World Champions, [Klaus-Jurgen Grunke] (GDR-1975) and [Eduard Rapp] (URS-1974), were late starters and Vaarten had a long wait. Rapp was first to start among the favorites. When he started he thought he had taken off before the gun and sat up, thinking he would be given a re-start. But the officials ruled his start to be legal, and he was disqualified. Grunke started somewhat slowly, his early splits trailing those of Vaarten, but he was much stronger over the last half of the race, and won the gold medal by almost 1.6 seconds. Vaarten held on for the silver medal, with Fredborg completing his medal set in this event, adding bronze to his 1972 gold and 1968 silver. As a pro, Vaarten later placed second in the points race at the 1986 World Championships.

These are the official results of the Men's 1.000m Time Trial at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, held on July 20, 1976. There were a total number of 31 participants. One of them, Elmabruk Kehel from Libya, did not start because of the last-minute boycott from the African countries.

Summary

At the 1975 World Championships, [Thomas Huschke] (GDR) had defeated Soviet [Vladimir Osokin] in the final. In the Montreal qualifying, Osokin had the fastest time, followed by Huschke. For the first time in this event at the Olympics, 16 riders advanced to the match racing. Osokin and Huschke made it thru to the semis easily, where they were joined by West Germany’s 20-year-old phenom, [Gregor Braun] and the Netherlands’ [Herman Ponsteen]. Braun faced Osokin in the first semi and there was almost nothing to choose between them throughout the race, but the youthful German prevailed by 0.17 seconds. In the other semi, Ponsteen outrode Huschke quite easily to advance to the final. The final was close for eight laps, but Braun was too strong in the second half of the race and won the gold medal with a 2+ second margin. Braun turned professional shortly after the 1976 Olympics and won the professional world title in 1977 and 1978. He competed as a professional thru 1989.

These are the official results of the Men's Individual Pursuit at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, held from 20 to 22 July 1976. There were a total number of 27 participants in the Olympic Vélodrome.

Summary

West Germany had won the last three World Championships, and four of the last five, as well as winning the gold medal in 1964 and 1972. Their team in Montreal was led by individual pursuit gold medalist [Gregor Braun] and the 1974 individual pursuit World Champion, [Hans Lutz]. But the qualifying in Montreal was led by the East Germans, with the Soviet Union second, followed by the FRG team. But in the match racing, West Germany was tough. They crushed Czechoslovakia in the quarter-finals and easily dispatched the British team in the semis. They were met in the final by the Soviet Union, which had defeated the GDR in the semi-finals. The final was not close, as West Germany won the gold medal easily. The bronze medal race, however, was very close, with Great Britain eking out a victory over East Germany. This was Great Britain’s eighth bronze medal in this – 1928-56, and 1972-76. East Germany would win the next four world titles, but they would never manage an Olympic gold in the team pursuit.

These are the official results of the Men's 4.000m Team Pursuit at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, held on 23 and 24 July 1976. There were 64 participant from 16 nations. In the first round each team raced alone, with the first eight teams qualifying for the quarterfinals.
