Overview

The fencing tournament took place at the [Stade d'Hiver] on the campus of University of Montreal with the same six events for men and two for women that had been contested since 1960.

For the second games in succession Europe swept up all the medals but this time there was greater parity between East and West. The Soviet Union were the most successful nation both in winning gold medals (3) and total medals (7) with West Germany the other nation to pick up more than one Olympic title. [Viktor Krovopuskov] of the USSR was the only double gold medallist of the Games.

[Thomas Bach], member of the victorious West German foil team, would later take a number of leading roles in the Olympic Movement, replacing [Jacques Rogge] as the President of the IOC in 2013.

At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, eight events in fencing were contested. Men competed in both individual and team events for each of the three weapon types (épée, foil and sabre), but women competed only in foil events.

One of the gold medalists from West Germany team was Thomas Bach, who currently serves as President of the International Olympic Committee.

Summary

[Fabio Dal Zotto] celebrated his 19th birthday on the opening day of the 1976 Olympics. A bronze medallist at the World Youth Championships earlier in 1976, he was included in the Italian team only to gain experience for future Olympics. Things did not start well for him as he came within a single hit of elimination in the first phase of the competition but from then on his form improved and he moved into the final stage by placing second in the semi-final. Dal Zotto won four of his five bouts in the final pool which tied him with former World Champion [Aleksandr Romankov] of the USSR. Much to everyone surprise the Italian then proceeded to defeat his Russian opponent with little difficulty and claim the Olympic title. France’s [Bernard Talvard] was the bronze medallist.

Dal Zotto appeared on the brink of a glittering career but this was to be his only major championship title. He was a regular member of Italian medal winning teams until a dispute with a teammate at a training camp led to him withdrawing from consideration for the Moskva Olympics. Recalled for the 1981 World Championships he was expelled from the team for breaches of discipline.

The men's foil was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics programme. It was the seventeenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from July 20 to 21 1976. 56 fencers from 23 nations competed

Summary

The Soviet Union had won the 1973-74 World Championships, while France won in 1975. The pool winners in round one were the Soviets, France, Italy, and Poland, the 1972 Olympic Champions. In pool three, Italy defeated West Germany, 9-7, but both teams advanced to the quarter-finals. The round one pool champions all won their quarter-final matches, except for Poland, which was defeated by the West Germans, 9-4. In the semi-finals, Italy and France tied on bouts, 8-8, but Italy won on fewer touches and advanced to the final, where they would have a re-match with West Germany. However, this time the Germans turned the tables, winning the gold medal, 9-6.

One member of the West German team would never compete again at the Olympics, but would become very influential within the Olympic Movement. [Thomas Bach] became an IOC Member in 1991 and in 2013 became President of the IOC.

The men's team foil was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fourteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from 24 to 25 July 1976. 63 fencers from 14 nations competed.

Summary

Sweden and West Germany had emerged as major players in the world of epee in the years since the Munchen Olympics with [Rolf Edling] of Sweden winning the World title in 1973 and 1974 and West Germany’s [Alexander Pusch] matching that feat in 1975. Both men qualified for the medal pool in Montreal which turned out to be the most evenly matched in Olympic history. Three men, including Pusch, were tied with a record of 3 wins and 2 losses whilst the other three, which included Edling, had 2 wins and 3 losses. Pusch won matches in the tie-breaking barrage to win gold ahead of teammate [Hans-Jurgen Hehn] and the 1968 champion [Gyl‘zl‘ Kulcse¡r] of Hungary. If one ignores the 1906 Intercalated Games, Pusch was the first German male to win an Olympic fencing title.

The men's épée was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics programme. It was the seventeenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from July 22 to 23 1976. 64 fencers from 26 nations competed

Men's Sabre, Individual

 Host City: Montreal, Canada
Venue(s): University of Montreal Winter Stadium, Montreal, Quebec
Date Started: July 21, 1976
Date Finished: July 22, 1976

Competitors 46from 18 nations

Summary

Once upon a time the sabre was almost the exclusive preserve of the Hungarians. By the mid-70s those days were long gone and instead it was now the Soviet Union that dominated the discipline. The high point of the Soviet era came in 1976 in Montreal where the team swept the podium. They were so dominant that the trio only lost 3 times in 51 matches against foreign opponents. The gold medal went to [Viktor Krovopuskov] with fellow Soviets [Vladimir Nazlymov] and 1972 champion [Viktor Sidyak] taking silver and bronze.

The men's sabre was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics programme. It was the eighteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from July 21 to 22, 1976. 46 fencers from 18 nations competed

Men's Sabre, Team

 Host City: Montreal, Canada
Venue(s): University of Montreal Winter Stadium, Montreal, Quebec
Date Started: July 26, 1976
Date Finished: July 27, 1976

Summary

As World Champions the Soviet Union were always going to be the favourites for the Olympic title in 1976. After the individual championships held a few days earlier had produced a 1-2-3 for the Soviets this favourite’s role became overwhelming. The USSR started off with a series of overwhelming victories before their title aspirations nearly come unstuck against Romania in the semi-final. The match ended in an 8-8 tie which turned into a defeat for the Romanian by a single hit when the tiebreaker rules were invoked. The Soviets then regrouped and went on to win a comfortable victory over Italy in the Olympic final.

The men's team sabre was one of eight fencing events on the fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fifteenth appearance of the event. The competition was held from July 26 to 27, 1976. 63 fencers from 14 nations competed.
