Overview

The Eastern Bloc boycott severely affected the 1984 Olympic gymnastics competition, as the Soviet Union was the top nation in the world for both men and women. However, by 1984 Romania was becoming a power in women'€™s gymnastics, challenging the Soviets, and Japan was still almost the equal of the Soviet men. They were both in Los Angeles, as were the host American gymnasts, who by 1984 had become among the world powers for both men and women. In addition, China was making its Summer Olympic debut and its men gymnasts were among the world'€™s best.

The men'€™s competition was a virtual tie among nations between Japan, China and the United States. Japan and China won nine medals, with the USA taking eight, while China won four golds and the United States and Japan won three each. Those three nations won 27 of 28 medals, the lone other medal going to [Philippe Vatuone] of France, a bronze won on floor exercise. The women similarly saw three nations win, in this case, everything. Romania and the United States both won eight medals, but Romanians won five golds to two for the USA. China won the only two other medals in the women'€™s events.

The 1984 gymnastics events took place at Pauley Pavilion which may not have meant much to European and Asian gymnasts, but was a venue with a heralded place in USA sporting history. Pauley Pavilion was, and is, the home of UCLA basketball, where John Wooden led the Bruins to 10 NCAA Championships between 1963-75.

At the 1984 Summer Olympics, two different gymnastics disciplines were contested. In addition to the fourteen artistic gymnastics events contested, for the first time at the Olympics, a rhythmic gymnastics event was contested–the women's individual all-around. All of the gymnastics events were held at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles from July 29 through August 11. Several teams who had qualified to compete were absent as a result of the 1984 Summer Olympics boycott, including the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, East Germany, Hungary, and North Korea.

This was the first time in Olympic competition that eight gymnasts were allowed to move onto an apparatus final, instead of the previous six.

The USSR and other satellite countries organized an 'Alternate Olympics' where the USSR, East Germany, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and other nations competed.

Format of competition

The artistic gymnastics competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics was carried out in three stages:

  • Competition I - The team competition/qualification round in which all gymnasts, including those who were not part of a team, performed both compulsory and optional exercises. The combined scores of all team members determined the final score of the team. The thirty-six highest scoring gymnasts in the all-around qualified to the individual all-around competition. The eight highest scoring gymnasts on each apparatus qualified to the final for that apparatus.
  • Competition II - The individual all-around competition, in which those who qualified from Competition I performed exercises on each apparatus. The final score of each gymnast was composed of half the points earned by that gymnast during Competition I and all of the points earned by him or her in Competition II.
  • Competition III - The apparatus finals, in which those who qualified during Competition I performed an exercise on the individual apparatus on which he or she had qualified. The final score of each gymnast was composed of half the points earned by that gymnast on that particular apparatus during Competition I and all of the points earned by him or her on that particular apparatus in Competition III.

Each country was limited to three gymnasts in the all-around final and two gymnasts in each apparatus final.

Men's Individual All-Around

Summary

The format was the now standard of 36 gymnasts advancing to a final round from the team all-around, with no more than three gymnasts allowed per nation. The total score consisted of 50% of the qualifying scores, and the final round score. The world'€™s greatest male gymnast in 1984 was Soviet [Dmitry Bilozerchev] who had won the 1983 World Championships at only 16-years-old. His routines were so difficult that he was already being spoken of as perhaps the greatest gymnast ever. But he could not compete in Los Angeles, nor could any Soviet. Japan'€™s [Koji Gushiken] had been runner-up to Bilozerchev at the 1983 Worlds and was favored in Los Angeles, but Gushiken qualified only fifth, slightly behind the USA'€™s [Peter Vidmar], who led the qualifying. However, Gushiken posted the highest score in the final round to come back and win the gold medal, with Vidmar taking silver, while China'€™s [Li Ning] won the bronze medal. Li would later light the torch at the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Bilozerchev would also win the 1985 European Championships but shortly after that title, shattered his left leg in a motorcycle accident while driving drunk. Amputation was considered but the leg was saved by using an Ilizarov device, an orthopaedic treatment pioneered by Siberian orthopaedist Gavriil Ilizarov, who practiced in Kurgan. Bilozerchev'€™s recovery was long and difficult but in 1988 he won a bronze medal in the Olympic all-around.

These are the results of the men's individual all-around competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The qualification and final rounds took place on July 29, 31 and August 2 at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion.

Results

Seventy-one gymnasts competed in the compulsory and optional rounds on July 29th and 31st. The thirty-six highest scoring gymnasts advanced to the final on August 2nd. Each country was limited to three competitors in the final. Half of the points earned by each gymnast during both the compulsory and optional rounds carried over to the final. This constitutes each gymnast's "prelim" score.

Men's Team All-Around

Host City: Los Angeles, United States
Venue(s): Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, Los Angeles, California
Date Started: July 29, 1984
Date Finished: July 31, 1984
Format: Six-person teams. Each gymnast to perform a compulsory and an optional exercise on all six apparatuses. Top five scores per team on each of the 12 exercises count towards the team score.

Summary

Japan had won this title at every Olympics from 1960-76, while the Soviet Union won in 1980, in their absence. The 1984 Olympic team event was expected to be a three-way battle between Japan, China, the 1983 World Champions, and the United States. The USA had never won a medal in team gymnastics, save for the unusual 1904 events, and the minimally attended 1932 Olympics. Led by [Peter Vidmar] and [Bart Conner], who placed 1st and 4th individually, the US upset the Chinese, who had to settle for silver, with the Japanese taking bronze.

These are the results of the men's team all-around competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The compulsory and optional rounds took place on July 29 and 31 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

Results

The final score for each team was determined by combining all of the scores earned by the team on each apparatus during the compulsory and optional rounds. If all six gymnasts on a team performed a routine on a single apparatus during compulsories or optionals, only the five highest scores on that apparatus counted toward the team total.

Men's Floor Exercise

Host City: Los Angeles, United States
Venue(s): Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, Los Angeles, California
Date Started: July 29, 1984
Date Finished: August 4, 1984

Summary

There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. China'€™s [Li Ning] and [Lou Yun] were tied after the team qualifying with 19.85, but Li'€™s perfect 10 in the final round brought him the gold medal. This was one of three apparatus golds he won in Los Angeles, adding golds on the rings and pommelled horse. He later opened a sportswear company in his native China, became quite wealthy, and was chosen to light the Olympic Flame at the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The bronze medal was shared by Japan'€™s [Koji Sotomura] and France'€™s [Philippe Vatuone]. Vatuone'€™s bronze was the only medal won in 1984 by a male gymnast not from China, Japan, or the United States.

These are the results of the men's floor competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The qualification and final rounds took place on July 29, 31 and August 4 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

Results

Seventy-one gymnasts competed in the compulsory and optional rounds on July 29 and 31. The eight highest scoring gymnasts advanced to the final on August 4. Each country was limited to two competitors in the final. Half of the points earned by each gymnast during both the compulsory and optional rounds carried over to the final. This constitutes the "prelim" score.

Summary

There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. China'€™s [Lou Yun] had scored two perfect 10s in team qualifying to hold a large lead into the final round. His 9.5 in the final round brought him the gold medal comfortably. Behind him, four gymnasts tied for second and shared the silver medal '€“ American [Mitch Gaylord], China'€™s [Li Ning], and Japan'€™s [Koji Gushiken] and [Shinju Morisue]. This is the only time in Olympic history (through 2014) that four medals of the same color have been awarded in a single event in any sport.

These are the results of the men's vault competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The qualification and final rounds took place on July 29, 31 and August 4 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion. With four silver medalists, the event produced the only four-way tie in the Olympics to date.

Summary

There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. American [Bart Conner] specialized on the parallel bars, winning the 1979 World Championships gold medal. He won the gold medal in Los Angeles over Japan'€™s [Nobuyuki Kajitani] and American [Mitch Gaylord]. In 1996 Conner married [Nadia Comaneci], the Romanian gymnastics star of the 1976 Olympics who had defected in 1991.

These are the results of the men's parallel bars competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The qualification and final rounds took place on July 29, 31 and August 4 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.

Men's Horizontal Bar

Host City: Los Angeles, United States
Venue(s): Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, Los Angeles, California
Date Started: July 29, 1984
Date Finished: August 4, 1984

Summary

There was a slight change in the format of the apparatus events in 1984 as eight gymnasts (previously six) qualified for the final round from the team qualifying, still with a maximum of two gymnasts per team. The gold medal in this event was historic as Japan'€™s [Shinji Morisue] won with a perfect 20.0, scoring two perfect 10s in the team qualifying, and then a perfect 10 in the final round. At the modern Games (post-WW2), the only other times this happened on the 20-point scoring system was by Romania'€™s [Nadia Comăneci] in 1976 on uneven bars, and Romania'€™s [Daniela Silivaş] in 1988 on the uneven bars, making Morisue the only man to accomplish this at the Olympic Games. Morisue was trailed by China'€™s [Tong Fei] and [Koji Gushiken], Morisue'€™s teammate.

These are the results of the men's horizontal bar competition, one of eight events for male competitors in artistic gymnastics at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The qualification and final rounds took place on July 29, 31 and August 4 at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion.
